Day 45 – Public Safety Officer Tax Credit

Last night, Senator Bailey had the honor of leading the tributes for the Maryland Fallen Heroes Ceremony in the Senate.  Senator Bailey served as host for this tribute in his capacity as Senate Vice-Chair of the Veterans’ Caucus.  This annual ceremony typically pays tribute to those Marylanders who were killed in action over the previous year; however, thankfully, no Marylanders’ lives were lost in combat this year.  This ceremony included recognition of those Senators who have served and currently serve our country in the military and a procession of the Maryland National Honor Guard.

Last night, another one of Senator Bailey’s bills passed the full Senate.  As amended, Senate Bill 303 enables local governments to define, by law, the definition of a “public safety officer” who would be eligible for a local property tax credit.  Senator Bailey introduced this legislation originally to expand this local property tax credit to state troopers and other state police officers.  The Committee amended this bill to broaden this eligibility further.

Today, Senator Bailey and Senator Miller had the opportunity to speak with students from Calvert County.  A group from the Calvert Association of Student Councils were in Annapolis to learn about State Government and hear from their local legislators.  Senator Bailey addressed the students about why he is a Senator and the importance of courage and integrity in public service.  He also spoke to them about legislation he has introduced to protect our communities by keeping tobacco products off school grounds and allowing greater monitoring of prescription drug data to combat the opioid epidemic.  He also answered questions from students on a range of educational issues, including Kirwan, school safety, and expanding opportunities for STEM programs in schools.
