2020 Voting Information

Due to concerns caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many Marylanders are considering how to cast their ballots in the November election.  I signed on to a letter to the State Board of Elections with my Senate Republican colleagues to get more information about how this election will be conducted.  The State Board has replied and has requested that we share information that may be helpful to inform Marylanders about the voting process for this election.  In-person early and Election Day voting will still be available; however, it is anticipated that many Marylanders will choose to vote by mail.  Regardless of whichever method you choose, I hope you find the information below helpful.  This information is accurate as of October 1, 2020, and it will be updated when new information becomes available.

Registering to Vote or Updating Voter Registration

If you are not registered to vote, or you need to update your registration information, you can do so on the State Board of Elections’ website.  The deadline to register or change your information prior to the election is October 13, 2020.

Voting By Mail

To vote by mail, you must submit a request form in order to receive your ballot.

You can request a mail-in ballot online through the State Board of Elections’ website

You also can request a mail-in ballot by submitting this form to your county’s Board of Elections.  The form also includes instructions on how to complete it and where to send it.

Requests for mail-in ballots for the 2020 General Election must be received by your local Board of Elections by October 20, 2020.  The State Board of Elections advises submitting your request as soon as possible in order to ensure the timely delivery of your ballot.

Voted ballots returned by mail must be postmarked on or before Election Day, November 3, 2020.  Make sure to sign the oath on the envelope.  The State Board of Elections has also advised that dropping your ballot in a mailbox on November 3 does not necessarily mean that it will be postmarked on November 3.

Additionally, there will be drop boxes located throughout St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties where ballots can be returned.  Ballot drop boxes will be open until 8:00 pm on November 3.
